Hopefully you are enjoying this very wintry winter.
The time after the winter solstice and into the new calendar year feels like the turning of a corner where we step off the path we had been on heading away from the previous growing season and get on the one that leads to a brand new season of growth. This is a primarily a very practical switch as we turn our attention to all there is to do in the short time we have before seeds meet soil in the greenhouse at the beginning of February and to the many projects that need to be done as the new season grows ever closer. It is also characterized by a slight change in the frame of mind, perhaps nudged by the small increase in daylight minutes.
This week marks our final winter veggie share delivery. It has been a real pleasure bringing you heaps of winter veggies to keep you nourished these cold months and we are sorry to leave you without until April! But a couple of months without veggies to deliver will allow us to really buckle down in preparation for 2025 vegetable growing.
And happily, seeds are already ordered for your 2025 crops! We will begin seeding trays for spring transplants in just a few short weeks at the beginning of February. These transplants will become the vegetables in our spring shares in April/May. We seed dozens of trays of veggie for transplanting in early March and are just now receiving seed deliveries to be sorted and put away.
Now we just need to get the final end wall on our new propagation greenhouse, move some tables and furnaces around and we will be ready to grow!
Other than seeds and greenhouses (well what is there other than that?!), we are in planning mode – mapping out 2025 veggie shares, creating budgets for the new season, investigating greenhouse infrastructure upgrades and so on. Oh and we’ve also been really enjoying snowshoeing in the forest!
Importantly we have also been gearing up to begin taking registrations for 2025 shares! Our online sign up form is now live on the website. We are happy to report that we have our full team of farmers returning to farm together for the upcoming season and are hoping to welcome another farmer on to the team. As this season comes to an end for us with the final veggies of 2024 delivered to you, we look forward to the upcoming spring and getting those first seeds into soil. We’re so grateful for our members and for your positive feedback and enthusiasm for the food we grow here.
We will see you this week and look forward to bringing you fresh things again in the spring!
